Movie Review: The Departed (2006)

Movie Review: The Departed (2006)

1. Introduction

Have you ever wondered how a cop and a gangster can live in the same world and avoid recognizing each other? If not, The Departed (2006) is a film that will make you ask this question. The film, directed by Martin Scorsese, is a crime thriller that touches upon deep themes of deception, betrayal, and crime.

The Departed is a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs. The film tells the story of a police officer (Leonardo DiCaprio) and a gangster (Matt Damon) whose lives become dangerous for each other. The two do not know about each other, but their worlds are rooted in each other.

The film surprises the audience at every turn and keeps them glued to their seats till the end. Due to its fresh and twisted approach, it emerges as a great thriller.

2. Plot Summary

The story of The Departed is based on the gangsters of Boston city and the deep secrets hidden inside the police department. The film mainly has two characters – Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio), who is a police agent, and Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), who works as a gangster. Both have to live with deeply hidden identities in their respective worlds.

Billy is sent as an undercover agent to infiltrate the gangster's network, while Colin gets a chance to infiltrate the police. Both have the same goal – to catch the other, but both of them are engaged in hiding their own secrets in this game.

The story has many interesting twists and turns, which keep the audience curious. The film depicts deception, betrayal, and complex relationships of friendship very beautifully. It is an interesting thriller that becomes heart-touching with its intensity and deep messages.

3. Cast & Characters

The casting in The Departed is excellent. Leonardo DiCaprio (Billy Costigan) has played his role in a very emotional and serious way in the film. His acting makes the audience feel the dilemma and mental state of his character at every moment. Seeing his acting, it seems that he was absolutely perfect for this role.

Matt Damon (Colin Sullivan) also played his character very well. His character progresses throughout the film with deception and cunning. His performance in the role of Sullivan is very impressive and his calm image hides the dangerous personality inside him.

Jack Nicholson (Frank Costello)'s character is the most amazing part of the film. His acting is of a perfect gangster leader. His every scene and dialogue makes the audience feel his dangerous personality. Apart from this, Mark Wahlberg, Mott Damon, and other members along with Wendy have also brought life to their roles.

4. Direction & Cinematography

The Departed, directed by Martin Scorsese, shows the subtle difference between a hero and a villain in a very wonderful way. The direction of the film perfectly matches the pace of the narrative and its drama. The depth and tension that Scorsese has created in this film keeps the audience completely engaged till the end.

Talking about cinematography, attention has been paid to every frame in this film. The movement of the camera is very precise and effective, especially when there are tense or action scenes in the film. A deep understanding is shown inside every scene, which makes the audience feel completely immersed in the film.

Scorsese has very beautifully shown places like the city street, police station and gangster's den. Looking at these places, it seems as if you are really in Boston and watching the events with your own eyes. The color scheme and lighting of the film are completely in accordance with the mood of the film, creating a dark and deep atmosphere.

5. Writing & Storytelling

The writing of The Departed is very cool and clever. Writer William Monaghan has put some amazing twists in the script of the film, which always surprise the audience. The exchange of dialogues in the film is also very interesting. The dialogue of every character fits very well according to the situation of the film.

The story has been written in such a way that the audience remains curious at every moment of the film. This film is a complete thriller, in which new events happen at every turn.

The story not only has a detailed depiction of deception and betrayal, but it also tells the story of the battle inside a person and his self-worth. It is written in such a way that the audience is able to understand the inner turmoil of the characters.

It is because of good writing that this film keeps the audience engaged till the end. The twist, climax, and every aspect in the end have been written so deeply that this film becomes worth watching again and again.

6. Music & Sound Design

The music of the film plays a very important role in The Departed. Its music, which is given by Howard Shore, enhances the mood of the film. The atmosphere of thrill and tension in the film can be fully felt through the music.

Some special songs and sounds in the music become the feature of the film. Apart from this, sound design also plays an important role in the film. The music is in perfect harmony with every action scene and tense moment. It makes the audience a part of the whole experience.

Songs like "Shipping Out to Boston" add energy to the dramatic moments of the film, while the gradually changing sounds further increase the intensity of the scene. The impact of these small sounds is so deep that it makes every element of the film more effective.

With the help of sound design, the film has been made even more realistic, especially the time when the distance between the police and the gangster is very less and the audience feels that tension.

7. Themes & Messages

The Departed has very deep and important messages hidden in it. The first message that the film gives is of "deception and betrayal". Every character in the film cheats to achieve their own purpose, and the price of this deception is very heavy. This film teaches us that it is not easy to recognize someone's true form.

Apart from this, the film also raises deep questions on "morality and identity". Both the police and the criminals have their own moral ideas, and the film depicts this conflict very well. The film also raises the question of who is right and who is wrong in the end.

The film also has messages of "courage and sacrifice". Both these aspects are depicted very accurately in the film. The characters have to struggle a lot to stick to their principles and take big decisions of their lives.

Through this film, we understand when and how a man's life needs to give up his ideals in front of others.

8. Personal Opinion & Critique

According to me, The Departed is a great film, which I can watch again and again. Every aspect of the film has impressed me, whether it is acting, direction, or story writing. Martin Scorsese has proved that he is a master director.

The film has a great mix of action and thriller, but at some places the film feels a bit slow. However, this slow pace was necessary to show the depth of the film and the mental struggle of the characters.

The ending of the film is extremely shocking and heartbreaking. It was so unexpected that I felt its resonance for a long time after watching it. But for some viewers, it might be too heavy and disappointing.

Finally, the message that this film gives is very important. If you love a great thriller and crime drama, The Departed is the perfect movie for you.

9. Audience & Recommendations

The Departed is for all those who love thrillers, crime, and suspense movies. This movie is more suitable for adult audiences as it contains violence, swearing, and many complex moral questions.

If you are a fan of movies that immerse you in the story in a very precise and effective way, then this movie will give you a different experience. It not only has action but also deep emotional aspects that make it even more interesting.

I would especially recommend it to those viewers who love a deep and complex story of the movie and who enjoy good dialogues and amazing acting from the cast.

10. Conclusion & Rating

In conclusion, The Departed is a great movie that is a great choice for the audience who loves crime thrillers. The story, acting, direction and music of the film have made it a classic. This film definitely meets all the criteria.
